University Preparation
 

University study can be a very daunting prospect, especially if you’ve been out of the education system for a few years.

Our tutors can help you with entrance requirements, particularly the Certificate in University Preparation (CUP) course. Our tutors can also help you learn or revise Level 3 courses that may be useful for your degree – for instance many students have had assistance with Level 3 Chemistry and Physics in preparation for Health Science study at the University of Otago.

Tuition in the initial stages can put you on the right course and help you gain the skills you need to succeed at university study.

Once you’ve started university you may find that it’s very different to learning in the school system. Lectures are fast-paced and cover a lot of content. There is also an expectation that you’ll do a lot of your study in your own time. This can be especially challenging if you’re talking a course in a subject that isn’t your strength, but may be important for your degree – Statistics is the usual example.

Our tutors can help you with understanding the lecture material, work through tutorial questions and guide you in the right direction towards completing your assignments. That’s not to mention exam preparation!

If you’re studying the New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation, with the aim of completing a Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery and Bachelor of Applied Science, we are able to help you! Most students needs assistance with their mathematics skills, but we can also help with studying human and microbial biology, cell biology and chemistry.

NZ Police Entrance Exam
 

The psychometric assessment is one of the most challenging parts of the initial entry into the NZ Police. Not only does it require confidence in verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning, but the tests put potential new recruits under great time pressure.

NZ Defence Force Entrance Exam - Army, Navy, Air Force
 

The entrance tests into the NZ Army, Navy and Air Force are particularly challenging, especially for adults who’ve been out of the education system for a while. A high level of literacy, mathematical, mechanical and abstract reasoning skills are required. In particular, a surprisingly good knowledge of Level 1 and Level 2 (Year 11 and 12) Algebra is necessary to do well. And of course the testing situation is one of extreme time pressure to see how well potential new recruits will cope with the stressful environment.

This entrance exam requires knowledge of basic mathematics, including geometry and trigonometry, as well as basic physics concepts.

SAT College Admission Exam
 

The Scholastic Assessment Test is used by US colleges and universities to assess potential students graduated from the school and who intend to continue their education in the US. The SAT Reasoning Test measures critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills.

Due to the structure of NCEA, most New Zealand students have not learnt all of the material covered in these tests, particularly in the mathematics section. AHeadstart has experience in successfully assisting previous students is improving their scores in the SAT, and making their dream of a sports scholarship a reality.
